Optimal environment for top-level research

The departments, institutes and subject areas of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering offer outstanding possibilities to scientists to conduct research, develop innovative methods and gain new insights.

Additionally, interdisciplinary research facilities and affiliated institutes of TU Dortmund University create ideal surroundings for world-class research.  The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (IML), for instance, are closely involved in the LogistikCampus of TU Dortmund, a pioneering project in its field.

Within the framework of the University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), the flagship program "Materials Chain" forms an outstanding profile focus of the joint research activities of the partner universities TU Dortmund University, Ruhr Universität Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen. Beyond this, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering demonstrates particular research strength in one of the four internationally recognized profile areas of TU Dortmund University: The profile area Materials, Production Technology and Logistics occupies a leading national position with its innovative research.

Prominent projects within the profile area include:
a Collaborative Research Center to study “Damage Controlled Forming Processes”
a Collaborative Research Center investigating “Sheet-Bulk Metal Forming”
a BMBF leading-edge cluster whose 180 corporate partners and 20 research institutions make it Europe’s largest logistics research project
a BMBF-funded consortium to develop Engineering Education 4.0, novel concepts of learning and teaching in engineering

A selection of research projects can be found via the tab „CRC” (collaborative research center). Further research activities you can find on the websites of the individual departments
